Not every room suits off-the-shelf furniture. Curved walls, alcoves, the space under a staircase or a boiler that needs to stay accessible all call for joinery that is designed and built to fit. On a recent project we made almost every piece to measure. These photographs were taken just before the final painting and finishing.
A curved fluted wall with hidden doors
The centrepiece is a curved wall lined with vertical fluted panelling. Flush doors are cut into the pattern so they almost disappear, and a recessed niche in the middle has curved shelves and built-in sockets for a television or speakers.
Behind one of the hidden doors sits the boiler, with its pipework neatly boxed in but easy to reach for servicing. It is a good example of how joinery can hide the practical parts of a home without making them awkward to use.
An oak staircase with a slatted balustrade
The staircase has solid oak treads and a balustrade of slim vertical oak slats that lets light pass through the stairwell. Underneath, the space that is so often wasted has been turned into full-height cupboards with flush doors.
Built-in storage that fits the room
In the kitchen area, an alcove unit combines arched open shelving with a closed cupboard above and a quartz desk top that curves round to meet the sash window. Next to the sink, tall Shaker-style larder cupboards give generous storage from floor to ceiling.
A study corner
Upstairs, a built-in desk runs beneath the window with open storage below, framed by reeded panelling in a deep green that makes a calm, focused place to work.
Why choose bespoke joinery?
- it makes full use of awkward spaces such as alcoves, curved walls and the area under the stairs
- it can hide boilers, pipes and cables while keeping them accessible
- every piece is designed to match, so the whole home feels considered
- it is built to last, with materials chosen for each job
